The Florida Safari Poolside Project

Every mural begins with a conversation, but the best ones begin with a shared vision.

When Susan reached out about transforming her poolside patio, she already had a clear source of inspiration—her own beautifully landscaped backyard garden. She wanted the mural to feel like a natural extension of the space she had spent years cultivating. Rather than simply painting decorative walls, the goal was to create an immersive environment where her favorite flowers, tropical plants, and outdoor décor blended seamlessly with hand-painted artwork.

The result became a vibrant tropical oasis where painted foliage flows into real plants, colorful wildlife, glowing fireflies, and even a mischievous monkey enjoying a tropical cocktail.

Beginning with Susan's Vision

Our first conversations focused on the atmosphere Susan wanted to create.

Much of the inspiration came directly from her own backyard garden. She loved the feeling of being surrounded by lush tropical plants, colorful flowers, and layered greenery, and wanted to capture that same peaceful atmosphere on the surrounding walls. Rather than copying the garden exactly, we used it as creative inspiration to design a one-of-a-kind tropical landscape that reflected her personality and complemented the existing space.

Susan also wanted the mural to work with the patio instead of simply decorating it. Her collection of tropical plants, sculptures, and outdoor accents would become part of the overall composition, making the artwork feel like it had always belonged there.

Building the Tropical Landscape

With the concept established, work began by creating the jungle itself.

Large tropical leaves and sweeping foliage formed the foundation of the mural, establishing depth and creating the illusion that Susan's backyard garden continued beyond the walls into a lush rainforest. Rich greens, layered shadows, and soft blue skies gave the wall dimension while allowing future focal points to emerge naturally.

As the background developed, glowing fireflies were introduced throughout the composition. These small touches became visual threads connecting every section of the mural, adding warmth and a little evening magic throughout the space.

Adding a playful surprise

Susan also wanted the mural to have personality.

That inspiration led to one of the most memorable features of the project—a relaxed monkey casually enjoying a tropical cocktail. Rather than depicting wildlife in a completely realistic way, this playful character adds humor and charm while reinforcing the vacation-like atmosphere of the backyard.

Complete with a colorful drink, citrus garnish, and tropical greenery, the monkey invites visitors to smile and reminds everyone that this space was designed for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying time by the pool.

Bringing the Garden to Life

Once the environment was established, it was time to introduce the stars of the mural.

A brilliantly colored tropical bird emerged among vibrant flowers, becoming one of the first major focal points. Its vivid blue feathers, golden chest, and rich orange accents immediately brought energy to the wall while echoing the colorful blooms found throughout Susan's backyard garden.

Throughout the mural, oversized flowers inspired by the plants growing around the patio began to appear. Large crimson blossoms with striking blue centers became dramatic focal points, while clusters of deep pink flowers softened architectural features and guided the viewer through the composition.

Each flower was intentionally painted larger than life, enhancing the feeling that the existing garden had grown beyond its borders and onto the surrounding walls.

Blending Art with Sculpture

One of the most rewarding parts of the project came as we integrated Susan's existing artwork and décor into the mural itself.

Rather than painting around her collection, we designed the composition to embrace it. Her impressive elephant head sculpture became part of the jungle scene, appearing as though it had always emerged from the rainforest canopy. Tropical plants positioned beneath it continue the illusion, connecting the real garden with the painted landscape.

Other decorative pieces and living plants were also carefully considered throughout the design process so that the mural and Susan's backyard garden would work together as one cohesive environment instead of separate elements.

By the time everything was placed back into the space, it became difficult to tell where the mural ended and the garden began.

The Final Finishing Touches

With every major subject complete, the final stage focused on refinement.

Additional highlights were added to leaves and flower petals to increase depth and definition. The glowing fireflies were balanced throughout the mural to create rhythm across the entire composition, while subtle adjustments to shadows and color transitions unified each wall into one continuous tropical scene.

These kind of finishing touches transformed individual painted sections into one immersive outdoor experience.

A Backyard Transformed

What began as inspiration from Susan's own backyard garden evolved into a vibrant outdoor retreat that feels both artistic and alive.

Drawing directly from the beauty already surrounding the patio, the mural expands her garden with colorful wildlife, oversized blooms, a playful cocktail-sipping monkey, and thoughtfully integrated sculptures that make the artwork feel like a natural part of the landscape.

Projects like this are always collaborative. Susan's ideas and her beautifully curated backyard garden provided the inspiration, while careful planning, layered painting techniques, and countless finishing details brought those ideas to life. The finished mural doesn't simply decorate the backyard—it extends the garden itself, creating an immersive tropical escape where art, nature, and imagination come together.
